APRIL International: Health Insurance for Expats in Germany

A move to Germany rarely fails because of the job – it fails because of the paperwork. Without a recognised proof of health insurance you get neither a residence permit nor a registration at the citizens' office. APRIL International is one of the providers we regularly use to solve this for international professionals, freelancers and students: applied for digitally, confirmed quickly and accepted by the authorities.

This page explains the two plan families relevant for Germany, how they differ and what you should clarify before you apply. Which one fits you comes down to one question: how long are you staying?

Why APRIL International for your stay in Germany?

Visa security

The plans designed for Germany are built to meet the requirements immigration offices set for proof of health insurance. After signing up you receive a confirmation you can take straight to your appointment.

Digital handling instead of paperwork

You submit medical bills as a photo through the app, and reimbursement runs without postal forms. If you are new to the country and do not yet know how German billing works, this is the biggest practical difference compared with traditional insurers.

Telemedicine and language

Video consultations are available around the clock in German, English and other languages. In your first months, before you have found a regular GP, this is a realistic first point of contact.

Selectable deductible

You control your premium through the deductible and optional modules such as dental or optical cover. One caveat: a low premium with a high deductible only makes sense if you can actually pay that deductible when it matters.

The APRIL plans for Germany

1. My Health International – long-term and open-ended

The solution for expats, self-employed people and digital nomads staying longer than a year or indefinitely.

  • Cover: comprehensive health insurance including outpatient and inpatient treatment.
  • Key feature: no time limit and worldwide cover – relevant if you use Germany as a base and travel frequently.
  • Underwriting: medical underwriting applies. Pre-existing conditions must be declared in full, otherwise you risk your cover when you need it.

2. MyTempoCover – short-term, up to 12 months

Designed for transition periods, job-seeker visa phases or guests staying no longer than a year.

  • Cover: focused on emergency care and inpatient treatment.
  • Key feature: fast sign-up without medical underwriting.
  • Duration: flexible, from a few days up to one year.

Which plan fits you?

Three questions usually settle it:

  • How long are you staying? Under twelve months with a clear end date points to MyTempoCover. A year or more, or an open end, calls for comprehensive cover.
  • Do you need routine outpatient care? If you see specialists regularly or take long-term medication, an emergency-focused plan will not serve you.
  • What is your employment status? As an employee above the compulsory insurance threshold or as a self-employed person you have different options than in a standard employment relationship. We check this before you apply, not after.

Alternatives in our portfolio: Care Concept (studies, au pair, visits), Hi.Germany by Hallesche (fixed-term residence permit, employer subsidy) and Foyer Global Health.

Your route to the right cover

  1. Clarify your situation: length of stay, visa type, employment status and pre-existing conditions.
  2. Get a quote: via the links on this page or together in a call – without obligation.
  3. Apply digitally: you usually receive the insurance confirmation for the authorities within minutes.
  4. Arrive safely: cover starts on your chosen date, and we stay your contact if your status changes later.

Frequently asked questions about APRIL International

Is APRIL International accepted by the immigration office?

The plans designed for Germany are built around the requirements for proof of health insurance, and you receive a confirmation after signing up. Which exact form your local authority requires depends on your visa type and federal state, so we check this with you before you apply.

What is the difference between My Health International and MyTempoCover?

My Health International is comprehensive health insurance with no time limit, worldwide cover and medical underwriting. MyTempoCover is a fixed-term plan for up to twelve months focused on emergency and inpatient treatment, but without medical underwriting.

Can I get cover with pre-existing conditions?

With plans that involve underwriting the insurer decides case by case – acceptance, a surcharge or an exclusion for specific diagnoses are all possible. Concealing conditions is the most expensive mistake: incorrect statements can void your cover in a claim. Tell us openly what applies and we will search accordingly.

Does the cover apply outside Germany?

My Health International is designed for worldwide cover, which also makes it suitable for travel and later relocations. The USA and Canada are usually treated separately because of treatment costs, so raise it early if those countries matter to you.

Can I switch to statutory health insurance later?

Moving into the statutory system depends on statutory conditions, for example employment subject to social insurance below the income threshold. If you want to keep that option open, discuss it before taking out private comprehensive cover, because the way back is not open in every constellation.
