The BDAE (Bund der Auslandserwerbstätigen) has specialised for more than 25 years in people who live and work abroad. The portfolio covers international health, liability and property insurance for expats, emigrants, digital nomads, long-term travellers and companies with staff abroad.
The difference from ordinary travel plans lies in the perspective: BDAE does not think in holiday weeks but in stages of life – including the question of what happens when you come back one day.

International health insurance with no time limit, designed for emigration and permanent life abroad. The contract continues even if your country of residence changes again.
Calculate Expat Infinity (English) · Deutsche Version
Expatriate health insurance for stays with a foreseeable end: a posting, a fixed-term project, a longer trip. Cheaper than an open-ended solution, but with a clear duration limit.
Calculate Expat Smart (English) · Deutsche Version
The module most often overlooked. If you hold German private health insurance and move abroad, you can suspend the contract instead of cancelling it. A prospective entitlement (Anwartschaft) preserves your original entry age and your state of health at the time the contract began.
Why this matters: anyone who cancels and returns years later has to go through underwriting again – with their age and diagnoses as they are then. The difference in premium can be substantial.
Calculate prospective entitlement
Legal disputes abroad are expensive and hard to navigate because unfamiliar law and an unfamiliar language come together. Expat Legal covers this area for people living abroad permanently. Further reading: legal protection for expats and legal protection without German residence.
Unsure whether you need a prospective entitlement? This is the question where we most often save people money. Contact us on WhatsApp (+49 151 28937141) or via the contact form.
A prospective entitlement (Anwartschaft) lets you suspend an existing German private health insurance contract during your stay abroad instead of cancelling it. It preserves your original entry age and your state of health when the contract began. It is relevant for anyone with private cover who does not rule out a return to Germany.
Expat Infinity has no time limit and is designed for permanent life abroad. Expat Smart is aimed at fixed-term stays abroad and is correspondingly cheaper, but it ends with the agreed term.
International plans treat North America separately because of high treatment costs – partly through surcharges, partly through limited validity. If these countries are relevant to you, even temporarily, plan for them from the start.
Yes, BDAE has a dedicated focus on corporate solutions for posted and locally employed staff abroad. Which arrangement suits your company depends on the length of the posting, the destination countries and the social insurance status involved.
That depends on whether you took out a prospective entitlement and what your insurance status was before you left. Without one, and without an entitlement to statutory health insurance, returning can become expensive. This question belongs before departure, not after.

We broker BDAE plans to emigrants, expats and long-term travellers – and we always plan for the return, because that is where the most expensive mistakes happen.

Across time zones via WhatsApp, video call or phone – even when your move is already under way.
You see what Infinity, Smart and the prospective entitlement each deliver – and what skipping the entitlement can cost later.

Emigration, posting or nomadic life call for different combinations. We choose based on your real outlook.
