Cigna Global is one of the world's leading providers of international health insurance. It is particularly relevant for people whose lives cannot be reduced to a single country: international professionals, founders, posted employees and families who use Germany as a base and regularly spend time elsewhere.
The structure follows a building-block principle: you choose a core module and add to it selectively. That allows very high benefit levels – but it can just as easily produce a plan that looks cheap on paper and covers too little in everyday life. That is exactly where our advice starts.

Cigna Global is international private health insurance – not a German comprehensive private plan in the classic sense. Whether this cover satisfies German compulsory insurance in your specific situation depends on your status: employment, self-employment, posting, residence permit and length of stay all lead to different answers.
We clarify this before you apply. If a German plan is the right route, we say so – see for example Hi.Germany by Hallesche for fixed-term residence permits.
Cigna works with a very large international network of medical providers. For you that means free choice of doctors and clinics – and in many cases direct billing instead of paying up front.
The core module covers inpatient treatment. On top of that you add outpatient care, preventive care, dental and optical cover, and medical evacuation as needed. In our experience the outpatient module is the one most often dropped for cost reasons – and the one most often missed afterwards.
Benefits in oncology and mental health are particularly well developed. Anyone who has tried to arrange psychotherapy inside an unfamiliar health system knows why this matters.
Multilingual customer service, digital claims submission and direct billing with clinics worldwide. For people working across time zones, availability is a genuine benefit feature.
Cigna plays to its strengths in benefit level and international mobility. If your priorities lie elsewhere, other providers often fit better:

There is no blanket answer. Cigna Global is international private health insurance and not a classic German comprehensive private plan. Whether the cover is sufficient for your residence permit and employment status depends on the individual case and should be clarified before you apply.
You choose the International Medical Insurance core module for inpatient treatment and add outpatient care, preventive care, dental and optical cover and medical evacuation as required. Without the outpatient module, ordinary doctor visits outside a hospital stay are not covered.
The area of cover is selectable, usually worldwide with or without the USA. The version including the USA is considerably more expensive because of treatment costs there. If you spend time in the USA regularly – even only a few weeks for work – plan for it from the start.
In many cases no: Cigna bills directly with clinics in its network. For smaller outpatient bills, reimbursement after submission is common. If paying up front is fundamentally a problem for you, look at PassportCard, which works with a rechargeable payment card.
The cover is designed internationally and in principle moves with you. You do need to report a change of country of residence, because premium and area of cover may be adjusted. An unreported move is the classic route into a coverage gap.

We have advised people with international lives since 1996. With Cigna Global everything depends on choosing the right modules – and that is exactly where we start.

Across time zones via WhatsApp, video call or phone – even when you are between two countries.
You see what each module costs and which gap appears if you leave it out. No building blocks without an explanation of the consequences.

A posting, a company formation or family reunification create different requirements. We check your status first, then the plan.
Relocation, a new family member or a changed area of cover: we adjust the plan instead of leaving you with the policy wording.
