Family Coverage: How Your Family Members Are Properly Insured Abroad

When the whole family goes abroad – or part of it stays in Germany – well-rehearsed coverage arrangements get shaken up: who is still family-insured? Does the liability family policy continue? Are the children protected on the world trip? Here you get the overview of insurance coverage for family members – at home and internationally.

Statutory Family Insurance: The Basis in Germany

In statutory health insurance, relatives are co-insured free of charge: "Insured are the spouse, the life partner and the children of members" – subject to conditions such as residence or habitual abode in Germany and income limits (source: Section 10 SGB V, gesetze-im-internet.de, translated). This is exactly where the foreign trap lies: if a family member permanently relocates abroad, the free family insurance generally lapses. For temporary stays (holidays, a semester abroad with continuing residence), it usually remains in place – the EHIC covers the family's EU trips too.

Private Family Policies: Who Counts as Co-Insured?

Liability, household contents, legal protection and accident insurance offer family policies: usually co-insured are spouses/partners in the joint household and children – minors in general, adults during school, training or their first degree. Important in the foreign context: co-insurance often depends on the joint household and residence. If the policyholder moves away, the whole family's coverage can tip; if a child moves for studies abroad, good policies keep them co-insured. We check these clauses contract by contract.

The Family Law Background: Standing In for Each Other

Protecting the family is not just care but legal reality: spouses are mutually obliged "to adequately maintain the family" (source: Section 1360 BGB, gesetze-im-internet.de, translated). If an income disappears through accident, illness or death, it hits the whole family – which is why protecting earning capacity and survivors' protection (term life insurance) belong in every family protection concept, all the more abroad without the German social safety net.

Typical Family Scenarios Abroad

The Whole Family Emigrates

Family insurance ends, family policies wobble: you need a new overall concept of international health, liability and accident solutions – ideally before the move. Starting point: Emigrating: What Happens to Your Liability Insurance.

One Partner Goes, the Family Stays

Check who is the policyholder of the family policies – transferring the contract to the partner staying behind is often the cleanest solution. The statutory family insurance continues for those staying at home.

A Child on a Year or Degree Abroad

Health coverage via TravelSecure (see TravelSecure travel insurance), liability via the family policy with sufficient foreign scope, worldwide accident protection – a triad we regularly put together for students.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Coverage

Are my children automatically co-insured on holiday?

In liability family policies and via statutory family insurance (per EHIC in Europe), yes. For trips outside Europe, the whole family needs international travel health insurance – family policies often cost barely more than individual ones.

Does my spouse remain family-insured if I work abroad?

If you remain a statutory health insurance member (e.g. during a posting), family insurance can continue for relatives residing in Germany. If you switch into a foreign system, it ends – then your partner needs their own solution.

What applies to unmarried couples?

The free statutory family insurance does not apply to unmarried partners. Private family policies, however, usually include partners in the joint household – make sure they are named in the contract.

Does term life insurance also cover death abroad?

Yes, reputable policies pay worldwide. What matters are notification duties when relocating and for dangerous activities – we check the terms before your move abroad.
