Hi.Germany by Hallesche: Comprehensive Health Insurance for Expats with a Residence Permit

Anyone arriving in Germany from abroad quickly discovers that the health system is above all a bureaucratic matter. Visa, residence permit, employer subsidy – without the right proof of insurance, not a single piece of paper moves.

Hi.Germany by Hallesche Krankenversicherung (ALH Group) exists for precisely this gap: German private comprehensive health insurance tailored to international professionals, freelancers and expats who live and work in Germany with a fixed-term residence permit of up to five years.

The decisive difference from many international plans: Hi.Germany is a German private health insurance plan from a German insurer. That considerably simplifies dealings with authorities, the employer subsidy and a later switch within Hallesche.

Your advantages at a glance

  • Visa-ready: the plan is designed to meet the statutory requirements for your residence permit in Germany.
  • No duration risk: no minimum contract term and a monthly right of cancellation – important if your plans may still change.
  • No paperwork frustration: fully digital application process and English-speaking customer service.
  • Employer subsidy: the plan is fully eligible, so your employer contributes to the premium within the statutory framework.
  • A future path: if you stay longer in Germany, a switch into Hallesche's regular plans is possible without starting from scratch.

The tiers

Hi.Medical S – the smart one

Budget-friendly basic cover for outpatient treatment and inpatient hospital care. Sensible if your health is stable and you want to keep the premium low.

Hi.Medical L – the comfortable one

Full cover including a single room, chief physician treatment, naturopathic treatment and psychotherapy. The last point is decisive for many expats: arranging psychotherapy inside an unfamiliar health system is difficult without the corresponding module.

Hi.Dental Basis and Komfort

Both Medical tiers can be combined with dental cover. Dental treatment is one of the most frequent and most expensive items that basic plans cover only to a limited extent – in most cases the module is worth it.

Who Hi.Germany suits – and who it does not

A good fit if: you have a fixed-term residence permit, work in Germany or are active as a freelancer, want to use the employer subsidy and prefer a German contract structure.

Less suitable if: you are employed subject to social insurance below the income threshold – statutory insurance generally applies then. Comprehensive cover is also oversized for short visits or a semester abroad; for that, look at Care Concept. If you only use Germany as a stopover and travel internationally a great deal, Cigna Global or Foyer Global Health may have the better structure.

Frequently asked questions about Hi.Germany

Who is Hi.Germany designed for?

For international professionals, freelancers and expats living and working in Germany with a fixed-term residence permit of up to five years. Anyone employed subject to social insurance below the income threshold generally falls under statutory insurance instead.

Can I cancel Hi.Germany monthly?

Yes. The plan has no minimum contract term and provides a monthly right of cancellation. That matters particularly if your project ends early, you change countries or you later move into statutory health insurance.

Does my employer pay a subsidy?

The plan is fully eligible for an employer subsidy. This means your employer contributes to the premium within the statutory framework, as it would with statutory health insurance.

What is the difference between Hi.Medical S and L?

Hi.Medical S is the budget-friendly basic cover for outpatient and inpatient treatment. Hi.Medical L adds a single room, chief physician treatment, naturopathic treatment and psychotherapy. Both tiers can be combined with Hi.Dental cover.

What happens if I stay in Germany longer than five years?

A switch into Hallesche's regular plans is provided for. That is one of the advantages over purely international solutions: you do not have to start again with a new insurer if your stay becomes permanent.
