Care Concept: Travel Health Insurance for Studies, Au Pair Stays and World Trips

Whether it is a semester abroad in Canada, an au pair year in France or a world trip with an open end: German statutory health insurance stops at the border or applies only in a limited way. Care Concept specialises in exactly this gap – with plans tailored to young travellers and long-term stays, at a fraction of the cost of comprehensive international cover.

One thing to understand: these plans cover acute illness and accidents. They are not a substitute for permanent comprehensive health insurance if you move your centre of life for good.

The advantages for Germans abroad

  • Specialised in education and travel: tailored plans for students, language course participants, interns and working holiday travellers.
  • Cost efficiency: particularly attractive premiums for young travellers up to the age of 35.
  • Flexible terms: cover for short trips as well as multi-year stays abroad of up to five years.
  • Fast online application: arranged in a few minutes – useful when things get tight shortly before departure.
  • Extendable package: liability and accident cover for stays abroad can be added optionally.

The plans at a glance

Care College – studying abroad

The classic for studies, language courses, internships and doctoral research abroad. Check in parallel whether the university in your destination country requires its own mandatory insurance – this is common in the USA in particular and must be resolved before enrolment.

Care Au-Pair – time with a host family

Tailored to au pair stays. In most destination countries, agencies and programmes require proof of health, liability and accident cover, so the combination is not optional but a prerequisite.

Care Global and Care Economy – on the road

The flexible solutions for holidays, working holidays and long-term travel. Care Economy is the budget-conscious variant, Care Global the more comprehensive one. The difference lies mainly in the scope of benefits and reimbursement limits – not just the price.

What to watch out for

Pre-existing conditions and ongoing treatment

Travel and student plans cover acute cases. Treatment that was already known or planned before departure is typically excluded. If you take long-term medication or have a chronic condition, you need a different solution – talk to us before you book.

Destination country and cost level

The USA and Canada are the most expensive case. A plan without adequate cover there is effectively worthless, because a single night in hospital can run into five figures.

Repatriation and emergency care

Watch the wording: repatriation that is "medically sensible" is considerably better than "medically necessary". The difference decides whether you are flown home in an emergency or stay where you are.

Term and follow-up

Five years is the upper limit. If your stay becomes permanent, you need an open-ended solution in good time, such as APRIL My Health International, BDAE Expat Infinity or Foyer Global Health.

Frequently asked questions about Care Concept abroad

How long can I stay covered abroad with Care Concept?

The plans cover short trips as well as multi-year stays of up to five years. If your stay abroad becomes permanent, you will need open-ended international health insurance as a follow-up solution.

Are liability and accident cover included?

Not automatically, but they can be added optionally. For au pairs this combination is even a programme requirement in many destination countries, and in daily life personal liability insurance is the single most important protection anyway.

Does the cover apply in the USA?

That depends on the chosen plan and area of cover. The USA always has to be considered separately because of the cost level. In addition, many US universities require their own mandatory insurance that you must take out regardless of your German plan.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Generally not. These plans are designed for acute illness and accidents. Treatment that was already known, planned or foreseeable before departure is typically excluded.

What is the difference between Care Global and Care Economy?

Care Economy is the budget-conscious variant with a narrower benefit framework, Care Global the more comprehensive solution. What matters are the reimbursement limits and the rules on repatriation and emergency care – not the monthly premium alone.
