BDAE Health Insurance for Foreigners in Germany

BDAE specialises in people who live between countries – originally for Germans abroad, today equally for professionals, researchers and families moving their centre of life to Germany. Two plan families matter for this group: Expat Germany for a fixed-term stay and Expat Infinity for an open-ended perspective.

The decisive difference is not the benefit catalogue but the timeline. Choose the wrong one and you stand without a follow-up solution after a few years – and then you have to go through fresh medical underwriting, which by that point may turn out differently.

The BDAE plans for Germany

Expat Germany – for a fixed-term stay

International health insurance for people moving their centre of life to Germany temporarily – designed for stays of up to five years.

  • Fits: postings, fixed-term employment contracts, research stays and residence permits with a clear end date.
  • Character: international health cover, not a substitute for German private comprehensive insurance in the classic sense.
  • To clarify: what happens if the planned three years turn into seven? That question belongs before you sign, not at the end of the term.

Expat Infinity – no time limit

Expat Infinity applies worldwide and has no maximum duration. That makes it relevant for people from abroad who are looking for long-term or permanent cover.

  • Fits: open-ended plans, self-employed people and anyone using Germany as a base while staying internationally mobile.
  • Advantage: you are not forced back into underwriting after a few years – cover continues even if your residence shifts again.
  • To clarify: cover in high-cost countries such as the USA and Canada, and how the plan interacts with compulsory insurance in your specific situation.

Which BDAE plan fits you?

Three questions almost always lead to the answer:

  • Does your stay have a reliable end date? A fixed-term contract with the intention to return points to Expat Germany. An open end points to Infinity.
  • How often do you leave Germany? If you regularly work in third countries or have family across several countries, worldwide design pays off.
  • What is your status? Employed, self-employed or posted – this determines which proofs you need and whether statutory insurance applies.

What to check before you apply

Recognition for visa and residence permit

Immigration offices check whether your cover meets the required minimum standards. What form of proof is demanded differs by visa type and federal state. Clarify this before your appointment, not during it.

Declare pre-existing conditions in full

International plans use health questions. Incomplete answers are the most common reason benefits are later reduced or refused. Tell us openly what applies and we will look specifically for a provider that can handle it.

Plan the follow-up solution

Ask at the outset: what happens on extension, on a move into employment subject to social insurance, and on returning to your home country? Clarifying this shortly before the contract ends leaves you with the weaker hand.

Frequently asked questions about the BDAE plans

How long does Expat Germany apply?

Expat Germany is designed for temporary stays in Germany of up to five years. If your stay goes beyond that, you need a follow-up solution in good time – for example Expat Infinity or German private comprehensive insurance, depending on your status.

What is the difference between Expat Infinity and Expat Germany?

Expat Infinity applies worldwide and has no time limit, so it also suits long-term or permanent stays. Expat Germany is tailored to a fixed-term stay in Germany. The difference lies mainly in the duration logic and the geographic design.

Is a BDAE plan enough for my residence permit?

That depends on your visa type and the responsible authority. International plans often meet the requirements, but not in every constellation and not identically in every federal state. We review your case before you apply so there are no surprises at your appointment.

Can I use a BDAE plan as an employee in Germany?

If you are employed in Germany subject to social insurance, statutory insurance generally applies. International plans are therefore mainly relevant for posted workers, self-employed people, guests or employees above the income threshold. We assess this individually.

What happens if I leave Germany again?

With Expat Infinity the worldwide cover in principle moves with you. With a Germany-focused plan you need to clarify whether and for how long cover continues after a change of residence. Always report a move actively – an unreported change of residence is the classic route into a coverage gap.
