Cigna Global: International Health Insurance for Emigrants and Digital Nomads

Whether you change continents as a digital nomad or settle abroad long-term, the requirement for international health insurance is the same: it has to work where you are, and it must not end when you move on. Cigna Global is built for exactly that – modular, worldwide and with very high possible benefit levels.

The modular design is both a strength and a risk. Leave out the wrong building blocks and you have a cheap plan that covers too little in daily life. That is where our advice starts.

Why Cigna Global for your time abroad?

  • Global reach: access to a very large international network of hospitals and doctors, with free choice of provider.
  • Modular design: you start with the core module for inpatient treatment and add outpatient benefits, preventive care, dental cover and evacuation as needed.
  • Selectable areas of cover: you tailor the cover to your target regions, for example worldwide excluding the USA – which reduces the premium considerably.
  • Round-the-clock support: a multilingual expert team coordinates your medical care, including from other time zones.
  • Prevention and serious cases: extensive benefits for cancer treatment and mental health.

Who Cigna Global particularly suits

Emigrants with high expectations

If you are looking for lifelong, high-quality private cover and do not want to change insurer every few years, the open-ended structure is the decisive point.

Digital nomads

Here a global network and digital handling matter more than the last percentage point of benefits. Pay particular attention to the rules on changing residence: it must be reported, otherwise a gap appears.

Specialists and expats

If your career takes you across several countries, the cover grows with you – without fresh medical underwriting at every move.

What to watch when configuring your plan

  • Area of cover: worldwide with or without the USA is the single biggest price lever. Take the USA option only if you need it – and do not leave it out if you are there regularly.
  • Outpatient module: without it, ordinary doctor visits, diagnostics and medication outside a clinic stay are not covered. This is the most common cost trap.
  • Deductible: lowers the premium, but must be available when it matters.
  • Evacuation: in regions with limited medical infrastructure this module is not a luxury but the actual core of your protection.
  • Pre-existing conditions: declare them fully – incorrect statements discovered later void your cover.

Alternatives compared

Cigna is strong on benefit level and mobility. If your priorities differ: PassportCard for cashless payment without upfront costs, Foyer Global Health for direct billing with clinics, APRIL International for a fine-grained zone model, BDAE for emigrants who need a prospective entitlement. Frequently asked questions about Cigna Global abroad

How does the modular structure at Cigna Global work?

You first choose the core module for inpatient treatment and then add outpatient benefits, preventive care, dental and optical cover and medical evacuation as required. Without the outpatient module, doctor visits outside a hospital stay are not covered.

Can I exclude the USA from my cover?

Yes, the area of cover is selectable. The worldwide-excluding-USA option lowers the premium considerably because cost levels there are particularly high. If you travel to the USA even occasionally for work, plan for it from the start.

Do I have to pay medical bills up front?

For clinics in the network Cigna frequently bills directly. Smaller outpatient bills are usually reimbursed after submission. If you never want to pay up front at all, PassportCard with its rechargeable payment card is the better structure.

What happens if I change country?

The cover is designed internationally and continues. You must report the change of country of residence, because premium and area of cover may change. An unreported move is the classic route into a coverage gap.

Am I covered during home visits to Germany?

International plans usually provide arrangements with time limits for this. How many days per year you are covered in Germany and whether longer stays are included should be clarified before you apply – particularly if you return regularly.
